Recladding

Cladding is outer walls of a building, made up of multiple materials layered over one another. It’s what provides insulation and weather resistance, and also contributes to the building’s appearance.

Cladding can be made form a broad range of materials including wood, metal, brick, vinyl, and composite materials like aluminium or wood blends.

In recent years there has been much more awareness on flammability of cladding, and there are new building codes in place about the type of cladding materials that can be used. Older buildings and apartment blocks are needing to get recladding done to comply with new regulations.

Why older buildings need recladding

Buildings that have cladding made of combustible material will need to get their cladding replaced. You may have heard of London’s Grenfell Tower fire in 2017 which caused 72 deaths. The main reason this fire spread so quickly was that the external wall was made of sub-standard aluminium composite cladding, which is highly flammable.

If your older building has flammable cladding material, it will need to be replaced.
