When will I need brick repointing?
If the mortar on your brickwork is looking discoloured, brick repointing will get it looking like new again, fixing the building’s appearance and improving its value.
If the mortar is worn, cracked or crumbling, it’s a sign it could be letting damp into the building (which will get progressively worse), and could eventually lead to serious structural issues. In these cases, it’s best to get them repointed as soon as possible, before you have a bigger, more costly problem.
Why bricks need repointing
It’s quite common for older and heritage buildings to need repointing, particularly if they are in an area exposed to the elements. Some of the reasons include:
· Old buildings’ mortar is made mainly from lime and sand, which is not as strong as cement
· It gets weathered by the wind and rain over time
· Natural movement in the ground and structure can cause cracking
